About the Product
What exactly is the Modem Boost™ Outdoor WiFi 6 Extender Pro?+
It is an outdoor-rated wireless access point that extends your existing home WiFi signal to areas outside your house — your backyard, patio, garage, barn, shed, pool area, or any outbuilding on your property. You connect it to your existing router using a single Ethernet cable, mount it outside, and it broadcasts a strong WiFi 6 signal up to 1,000 feet in open outdoor areas. It works in rain, snow, heat, and freezing temperatures and needs no outdoor power outlet — all power runs through the same Ethernet cable using PoE (Power over Ethernet) technology.
What is WiFi 6 and why does it matter?+
WiFi 6 is the latest generation of WiFi technology (officially called 802.11ax). Compared to older WiFi 5 routers, WiFi 6 handles more devices at the same time without slowing down, is more efficient in congested environments, and delivers faster real-world speeds especially when multiple devices are connected simultaneously. If you have phones, laptops, security cameras, smart speakers, and tablets all connecting at once, WiFi 6 manages all of them far better than older routers. The Modem Boost™ Extender Pro supports dual-band WiFi 6 with a combined theoretical speed of 3,000 Mbps.
What does AX3000 mean?+
AX3000 refers to the combined maximum theoretical wireless speed of the device across both frequency bands — 573 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 2,402 Mbps on the 5GHz band, totaling approximately 3,000 Mbps. The "AX" designation means it is a WiFi 6 device. In real-world conditions your actual speed depends on your internet plan, router, number of connected devices, and distance — but AX3000 represents the hardware ceiling of what the device is capable of.
What is IP67 and what does it protect against?+
IP67 is an international protection rating that tells you exactly how well sealed a device is against water and dust. The "6" means the device is completely dust-tight. The "7" means it can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes and still function normally. In practical terms for outdoor use, this means it handles rain, snow, garden hose splashes, heavy condensation, and dusty environments without any issues. The unit is mounted outdoors permanently and designed to handle whatever US weather throws at it.
What is PoE and why is it useful?+
PoE stands for Power over Ethernet. It means the device receives both its internet connection and its electrical power through a single standard Ethernet cable. You plug the included PoE adapter into a regular wall outlet inside your home, connect one Ethernet cable from the adapter to your router and another to the outdoor unit, and that is it — no outdoor electrical outlet needed, no separate power cable running through your wall. You can run up to 320 feet of Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable between the PoE adapter and the outdoor unit.
What operating modes does it support?+
The unit supports four different operating modes depending on your setup needs. AP Mode converts a wired Ethernet connection from your router into a wireless outdoor WiFi network — this is the most reliable option and what most customers use. Repeater Mode wirelessly picks up your existing indoor WiFi signal and rebroadcasts it outdoors, which works without running any cable but can reduce speeds slightly. Mesh Mode allows you to connect up to 6 units together to cover very large properties with seamless roaming. Router Mode lets the unit act as a standalone router connected directly to a modem, with no separate router needed.
How many devices can connect at once?+
The unit officially supports up to 256 simultaneous device connections using WiFi 6's MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology. In real-world use, most outdoor installations handle 20 to 50 connected devices without any performance issues. Security cameras, phones, laptops, smart speakers, tablets, and other IoT devices can all connect at the same time.
What is the lightning protection on this unit?+
The unit includes built-in 15kV ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) protection and 6kV lightning surge protection. This means the internal circuitry is protected against nearby lightning strikes and electrical surges that commonly travel through cables during storms. It is not a full lightning rod and does not guarantee protection against a direct strike, but it handles the electrical spikes that cause most outdoor equipment failures during thunderstorms.
Does it work in extreme cold or heat?+
Yes. The unit is rated to operate in temperatures from -40°F to 131°F (-40°C to 55°C). This covers every US climate from Minnesota winters to Arizona summers. Storage temperature range extends even further. There are no seasonal restrictions on where you can use this unit in the United States.
Installation & Setup
How difficult is it to install?+
Most customers complete the full installation in under 30 minutes with no technical background. The basic steps are: mount the unit on a wall or pole outside, run an Ethernet cable from inside your home to the unit (through a small drilled hole or under a door seal), connect the included PoE adapter to your wall outlet and router inside, and then configure the mode through the web interface or mobile app on any phone or laptop. No special tools are required beyond a drill for the wall anchors if you are mounting it permanently.
Do I need an electrician or technician to install it?+
No. The device is specifically designed for homeowner self-installation. Because it uses PoE (Power over Ethernet) you do not need to run any electrical wiring, install an outdoor outlet, or work with your home's electrical system at all. The only cable you run is a standard Ethernet cable, which is the same cable used to connect computers and routers and carries no dangerous voltage.
What cable do I need and how far can I run it?+
You need a standard Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable. Cat5e is the minimum and works fine. Cat6 gives slightly better performance over long runs. You can run up to 320 feet (approximately 100 meters) of cable between the PoE adapter inside and the outdoor unit. For most home installations the cable run is 20 to 80 feet. Ethernet cable is available at any hardware store and costs very little per foot.
Where should I mount the unit for best results?+
Mount it as high as practical on the exterior wall or under the eave of your roof, pointed toward the area where you need coverage. Higher placement means a wider signal broadcast with fewer obstructions. Avoid mounting it behind large metal objects, inside enclosed spaces, or directly against thick concrete or brick walls. The ideal placement is midway between your router and the farthest point you need coverage — so if you want WiFi at the end of a 200 foot yard, mounting the unit at the back corner of the house at 15 feet high works better than mounting it at the front.
Does it come with everything I need to install it?+
Yes. The box includes the outdoor unit, 4 omni-directional antennas, the PoE wall power adapter with US plug, a 5-foot Ethernet cable for the indoor connection, 4 cable ties, wall mounting hardware with screws and anchors, and a quick installation guide. The only thing you need to provide is the Ethernet cable for the run between the PoE adapter and the outdoor unit (if your run is longer than 5 feet), which you can buy at any hardware store.
How do I configure the device once it is installed?+
After powering it on, connect any phone, tablet, or laptop to the unit's WiFi network (the default network name and password are printed on the device label). Then open any web browser and go to the management address shown on the label (typically 192.168.x.x). A setup wizard walks you through selecting your operating mode and connecting to your existing WiFi network or router. The whole configuration process takes about 5 minutes.
Can I mount it on a pole instead of a wall?+
Yes. The unit includes a mounting bracket that attaches to both walls and poles. It is compatible with standard 1 to 2 inch diameter poles. If you need to mount it on a fence post, deck rail, or a dedicated mounting pole, the bracket handles all of those options. We also sell a dedicated weatherproof mounting pole separately if you need to create a freestanding mount in your yard.
Compatibility & Performance
Will this work with my internet provider?+
Yes. It is compatible with all major US internet providers including Xfinity, AT&T, Spectrum, Verizon, Cox, Frontier, T-Mobile Home Internet, and Starlink. It also works with any standard home router from any manufacturer. The device connects to your existing network — it does not replace your internet service or require any changes to your account with your provider.
Does it work with Starlink?+
Yes. The Modem Boost™ Outdoor Extender is fully compatible with Starlink satellite internet. In AP Mode you connect it via Ethernet to your Starlink router and it creates an outdoor WiFi network using your Starlink connection. In Repeater Mode it wirelessly extends the Starlink WiFi signal outdoors without any cable run.
Will my internet speed be the same outdoors as indoors?+
In AP Mode (wired connection) the outdoor speed will be very close to your indoor speed, limited primarily by your internet plan and the distance between connected devices and the outdoor unit. In Repeater Mode (wireless) you will typically see a 30 to 50 percent reduction in speed because the device is receiving and retransmitting the signal wirelessly. For most everyday outdoor use — streaming, browsing, video calls, security cameras — the speed in either mode is more than sufficient. We always recommend AP Mode with an Ethernet cable for the best possible performance.
What is the real-world range I can expect?+
In open outdoor areas with clear line of sight and no obstructions, many customers achieve 300 to 600 feet of strong usable signal. The 1,000 foot specification refers to the maximum technical range under ideal open-air conditions. Dense trees, walls, fences, buildings, and other obstructions reduce range. For most residential backyards, gardens, and driveways the coverage is excellent throughout. For farms and large properties multiple units in Mesh Mode can extend coverage across much larger distances.
Does it work for outdoor security cameras?+
Yes and this is one of the most common uses. Outdoor security cameras need a stable WiFi connection to stream video reliably, and most indoor routers cannot reach cameras mounted far from the house. The Outdoor Extender provides a strong, stable signal exactly where security cameras are typically installed — under eaves, on fence posts, and around the perimeter of the property. The IP67 rating means it handles the same outdoor conditions as the cameras themselves.
Can I use it to connect two separate buildings?+
Yes. Using Point-to-Point mode two units can create a wireless link between two buildings up to 1.9 miles (3 kilometers) apart in open areas with clear line of sight. This is useful for connecting a detached garage, workshop, barn, rental unit, or outbuilding to your main home's internet without running underground cable between buildings. Both buildings get full WiFi coverage from their respective units.
Does it work with my existing mesh system?+
Yes. In Repeater or AP Mode the Outdoor Extender works alongside any existing indoor mesh system including Eero, Google Nest, Orbi, Velop, and others. It does not replace your indoor mesh system — it extends your outdoor coverage beyond what your indoor nodes can reach.
Does my internet plan need to be a certain speed?+
No minimum speed is required. The device works with any internet connection. However your outdoor WiFi speed will never exceed your internet plan speed — if your plan provides 100 Mbps then your outdoor devices will receive up to 100 Mbps, not more. The extender does not increase your internet plan speed, it extends the reach of whatever speed you already have.

Troubleshooting
The unit powers on but I cannot connect to it. What should I do?+
First confirm the Ethernet cable is securely connected at both the PoE adapter and the outdoor unit. Check that the PoE adapter is plugged into a working wall outlet and that the indicator light on the adapter is on. Then check that your phone or laptop is connected to the unit's default WiFi network — the network name and password are printed on the label on the bottom of the unit. If you still cannot connect, hold the reset button on the unit for 6 seconds to restore factory settings and start the setup again.
My outdoor WiFi speed is much slower than my indoor speed. Why?+
If you are using Repeater Mode this is normal — repeating a wireless signal always introduces some speed reduction. Switching to AP Mode with an Ethernet cable between the unit and your router will give you speeds much closer to your full indoor speed. If you are already using AP Mode and seeing slow speeds, check that your Ethernet cable is Cat5e or better, that it is not kinked or damaged, and that the cable run is under 320 feet. Also try moving the unit to a position with less physical obstruction between it and the areas where you need coverage.
My devices keep dropping the outdoor WiFi connection. What is causing this?+
The most common cause is the outdoor unit being placed too far from the area you are trying to cover. Try moving the unit closer to where your devices are used. Another common cause is interference from neighboring WiFi networks on the 2.4GHz band — logging into the management interface and switching to a less congested WiFi channel often resolves this. If the issue persists contact us at support@modemboost.com and we will walk you through the settings.
The unit worked fine for weeks but suddenly stopped working. What happened?+
First check that the PoE adapter inside is still powered and the Ethernet cable connections are secure at both ends — cables can work loose over time especially in outdoor environments where wind and movement put stress on the connections. If power and cable connections are fine, try a factory reset by holding the reset button for 6 seconds. If it still does not work after a reset contact us at support@modemboost.com as this may be covered under your 2-year warranty.
Can I use this with a VPN?+
Yes. The unit passes all network traffic through your existing router, so any VPN running on your router or individual devices works normally with the outdoor network. The unit itself does not have a built-in VPN but does not block or interfere with VPN connections on connected devices.
Is the outdoor network secure?+
Yes. The unit supports WPA3 — the latest WiFi security standard — as well as WPA2-PSK for devices that do not yet support WPA3. You set your own network name and password during setup. The management interface is also password protected. We strongly recommend changing the default admin password during initial setup.
